Information

Welcome to Newbury and Thatcham Repair Cafe serving Newbury, Thatcham and the surrounding area.

Newbury and Thatcham Repair Cafe holds events where visitors bring items for repair such as electronic and electrical goods, clothes and textiles, pottery, wood items, toys etc.  Mobile phone and IT advice is available.  Tools and blades e.g. scissors and secateurs can also be sharpened.

For the event on 28 July 2024 (see below) at Frank Hutchings Community Hall, Thatcham, we are offering Simple Bike Repairs, including repairing punctures, adjusting brakes, chains and gears and other repairs.  Our bike repairer has said, “If it moves but shouldn’t, or if it doesn’t move but should, or if it doesn’t work like it should, we’re prepared to consider it!”

It is essential to let us know by 6p.m. on Saturday 27 July (via email or Facebook – see below) if you wish to have a bike repaired, including make and model, and what needs repairing e.g. puncture, sticky brakes, as we have limited capacity for this type of repair and some repairs aren’t suitable for a Repair Cafe environment.  If a spare part is required after your bike is assessed and you haven’t brought it with you, we will ask you to return to the next event, having bought the spare part elsewhere.

Volunteer repairers repair items with the visitors, if those repairs are feasible.  Repairs are free but we appreciate donations to fund future events.

The Repair Cafe runs events about once a month, alternating between Newbury and Thatcham. For the rest of 2024 the venues and dates are as follows:

  • Sunday July 28th  10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m at Frank Hutchings Community Hall, Thatcham, RG18 4QH
  • Sunday August 18th 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at Newbury Methodist Church Hall, RG14 1AN
  • Sunday September 29th  10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m at Frank Hutchings Community Hall, Thatcham, RG18 4QH
  • Sunday October 27th 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at Newbury Methodist Church Hall, RG14 1AN
  • Sunday December 1st 10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m at Frank Hutchings Community Hall, Thatcham, RG18 4QH

Please note events are Sunday afternoon in Newbury, and Sunday morning in Thatcham

Some items are not suitable for us to repair, such as  microwaves, petrol-driven items, gas appliances, for safety reasons.  Items should be small/light enough for one person to carry on their own.  If in doubt as to whether the item is suitable to bring for repair, please email us – see below.  We also suggest that you check the warranty of your item to see if it can be fixed by the manufacturer.

We try our best to repair as many items as possible during the session – sometimes if we are busy there may be a wait for a suitable repairer to become free. We ask that you bring  only 1 clean item for repair.  Later in the event, there may be, but only may be, time to have a second item repaired depending on the item and how busy we are, but you will need to register the second item at the check-in desk at that time.  For electrical and electronic items, please bring leads and ancillary leads; chargers, batteries and other power supplies; speakers etc with you as these enable us to fully test the faulty item. For clothing, please bring any buttons or zips etc which need replacing.

We look forward to seeing you at the Newbury and Thatcham Repair Cafe.

Please see the Facebook page (below) for further information, or email us at [email protected].  If in doubt as to whether you think we can repair the item please email a photo, together with the make and model of the item.
